Peter Phillips’s Tallis Scholars, world-famous for their performances and recordings of Renaissance choral music, tonight explore a later period, the English 17th century. Their programme traces the development of two genres, the full anthem (for choir alone) and the verse anthem (with solo passages and organ), in the music of Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Tomkins and Pelham Humfrey, and the glorious culmination of that development in the hands of Henry Purcell. With such a popular choir in such appealing repertoire, early booking is recommended.
