This programme, devised by accompanist and song specialist Roger Vignoles, celebrates the bicentenary of the birth of Robert Schumann by tracing the story of his long, difficult courtship of the young pianist Clara Wieck, and their happy but all too brief marriage. Readings from the couple’s letters and diaries are complemented by songs, piano solos and chamber music not only by Schumann himself but also by Clara, the couple’s friend Mendelssohn and their protégé Brahms.
