The Galliard Ensemble, formerly championed by BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme, has through concerts, broadcasts and recordings become Britain’s best-known wind quintet. Today, the Ensemble plays quintet versions of Mozart’s most intense work for wind and Ravel’s baroque-style dance suite; it marks Samuel Barber’s centenary with an unseasonal but welcome performance of his atmospheric Summer Music, one of the real gems of the wind quintet repertoire; and it rounds off its appealing programme with Malcolm Arnold’s witty treatment of sea shanties.
