The acclaimed English Chamber Orchestra makes a welcome visit to Bath in the company of its Associate Conductor and Music Director designate Paul Watkins, well known as a leading solo and chamber-music cellist, and since winning the 2002 Leeds Conducting Competition also greatly in demand on the podium. He is both soloist and director in Haydn’s Concerto in C, rediscovered in a Czech library in 1961 and immediately recognised as a key work in the cello literature. In the rest of the programme he conducts music for strings: one of the three Divertimenti in which the 16-year-old Mozart suddenly found his true voice, Dvorák’s magical Nocturne, and Tchaikovsky’s irresistible Serenade.
