Mark Padmore, pre-eminent among British tenors, is joined by the outstanding horn player Richard Watkins and the indispensable pianist Julius Drake in a rich programme of fascinating contrasts and symmetries. In the first half, music by Beethoven – an appealing selection of songs, including the ground-breaking cycle To the distant beloved, and the early Horn Sonata – flanks the first of Britten’s Canticles on devotional poetry. The second half begins with a group of Schubert favourites, before the three performers join forces for Britten’s Third Canticle, on a wartime poem by Edith Sitwell, and Schubert’s late Auf dem Strom, probably intended as an elegy for Beethoven.
