“Simply one of the finest pianists this country has produced” is how Gramophone magazine described Imogen Cooper earlier this year. On the first of her two visits to this year’s Mozartfest, she plays one of Haydn’s last sonatas, written during his second London visit, followed by a sonata by Haydn’s pupil Beethoven which was supposedly inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest; then Brahms’s arrangement of the variation movement of his first Sextet, made specially for Clara Schumann, is followed by Robert Schumann’s intensely poetic Fantasy Pieces.
