Beethoven 12 Variations on “Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” from Mozart’s Magic Flute Op 66

Brahms Sonata No 2 in F major Op 99

The inspiring Steven Isserlis and his regular recital partner Dénes Várjon present a feast of music for cello and piano from the eventful century after Mozart’s death: an early set of Beethoven variations on a cheerful Mozart theme, and a later Sonata alternating between lyricism and drama; the tuneful Sonata Schubert wrote for the arpeggione, a short-lived cross between the cello and the guitar; an expressive slow movement by Clara Schumann’s talented half-brother Woldemar Bargiel; and the powerful Second Sonata by Brahms.
