The ten mixed voices of the universally acclaimed Tallis Scholars, under their founder-director Peter Phillips, offer a feast of Renaissance and Baroque choral music in the ideal surroundings of Bath Abbey. The programme traces the German hinterland of Mozart’s sacred music, from Heinrich Praetorius and Hans Leo Hassler in the early 16th century, by way of Heinrich Schütz (represented by two fine motets and the exuberant double-choir German Magnificat) and Dietrich Buxtehude, to a motet by Bach. Odd one out is Allegri’s famous Miserere, with its steepling soprano ornamentation – a well-guarded secret of the Vatican’s Sistine Choir, until the 14-year-old Mozart heard it and wrote it down from memory.
